Annika is a Toronto-based artist specializing in wheel-thrown and slip-cast ceramics. Her interest in clay began while she was studying Textile Design in Toronto, at the Ontario College of Art and Design University (OCADU). Since graduating in 2013 with a Bachelor of Material Art and Design, she has been focusing solely on clay as her medium. Aside from making, she also works part-time as a studio technician, teaches ceramic classes and volunteers at the Gardiner Museum.
Function plays a large role in Annika’s work; she enjoys making items that combine surface design and ergonomic details to create useful objects to be admired. She is currently exploring ways to incorporate colour and pattern using mason stains mixed into clay to create a marbled effect. As well, she is drawn to a speckled stoneware clay body that offers an organic pattern and provides a grip for the hand where the clay is left exposed. All of her work is fired to cone 6 using porcelain casting slip, mid-porcelain and stoneware clay bodies.
