Catherine Jeffrey’s cityscapes in oil not only portray the city’s structural landscape, they also evoke a mood or a feeling of time and place. She chooses to paint moody atmospheric scenes in the rain or snow, the first light of day or the disappearing light of late afternoon. She also likes to capture the transformation that happens at night, when reflected light creates abstract images distorted by neon lights and traffic.
Catherine Jeffrey was born in Abbotsford, British Columbia in 1952. She studied Fine Art at the University of Alberta, graduating with a Bachelor of Education. The daughter of an Air Force Captain, she moved extensively and finally settled in the Dundas Valley near Hamilton Ontario.
My inspiration comes from what I see around me, being particularly drawn to old buildings, architecture, urban scenes, and everyday activities of regular people. I enjoy how familiar scenes are transformed by a mood of weather or a play of light. My focus is painting alla prima, incorporating loose expressive brush work, with an accent on limited yet dramatic values. I don't want to push the abstract so far that I lose the essence of the scene. For me there must be coalescence between abstraction and representation.
All of my work for sale at the One Of a Kind show is original. In the on line shop I am also offering prints of some favorite images, available on canvas or paper.
Original oil paintings on canvas or panel. Giclees made from original art work.
