Sue McLeod is a ceramic artist/candle maker who works out of her home studio in Victoria, BC. In 2010, she graduated with an honours diploma from the Clay Program at Kootenay School of the Arts in Nelson, BC. Sue has participated in various juried craft markets and fine art shows around Vancouver Island and the lower mainland.
She recently pivoted the direction of her career in ceramics, taking a break from the craft market circuit to accept a job as the Ceramics Studio Technician at the Cedar Hill Arts Centre in Victoria. Sue has a strong technical background in the field of ceramics and has given a significant amount of her focus to the study of ceramic glaze chemistry. In Jan 2015, Sue completed a Glaze Formulation course through Alfred University in NY and has plans to continue with this area of study as more advanced courses are offered. Meanwhile, she loves to solve glaze problems and test new glazes in her home studio.
Sue makes whimsically elegant, functional ceramics using a white stoneware clay and vibrantly coloured glazes. She reveals her true expression as a clay artist by creating teapots that are full of unique character and personality. Combining wheel throwing and hand building, she pieces them together over many days, sometimes weeks, carefully considering and altering each part of the form as it comes to life. One of Sue's sculptural teapots was published in Lark Crafts "500 Teapots - Volume 2," juried by Jim Lawton.
Having started her artisan career as a soy candle maker in 2004, Sue has now combined her candle making skills with her ceramic art, producing a line of unique translucent porcelain vessels to contain the hand poured wax of the candle. These vessels are glazed with a cracked textured "lichen" glaze and the natural translucency of the porcelain allows the light of the burning candle to pass through, creating glowing patterns of light and shadows.
Sue also makes various other forms, both on the potter's wheel and through hand building techniques. She does a lot of experimentation with form and is always coming up with new ideas for unique ceramic pieces. Her product line is always changing and consists of, but is not limited to mugs, bowls, vases, jugs, puzzles, games, magnets, and jewellery. Sue makes all of her own glazes from scratch and electric fires all of her pieces to cone 6.
I use 2 kinds of clay in my work. A white stoneware and a (whiter) translucent porcelain. All of my glazes are made from scratch with my own unique glaze recipes. Candles are made with unscented soy wax. Everything is lead free.

Shipping charges are estimates. Given the nature of the online software combined with the handmade nature of my products (fragile and irregular shapes and sizes), my online shop is not able to predict 100% accurate shipping charges for every possible destination.
If you have any questions about shipping costs prior to placing your order, please don't hesitate to contact me and I can give you a much more accurate shipping estimate based on your order and specific location.
