Atelier Stōbben

Paul Neudorf

Montréal, Quebec, Canada

Atelier Stōbben specializes in modern lighting and objects created from long-lasting materials, such as wood, metal and concrete, and is inspired by my Mennonite heritage and generations of self-sufficiency. I come from a long line of creators and makers, and was heavily influenced by my parents who also make everything, from 5 of the houses we lived in, our wooden furniture, the clothes we wore, quilts for our beds, to the canning and food we ate.

In 2016, I gave myself the challenge to move from consuming to producing as much as possible, to see how much I could make myself, with the intent of becoming as self-sufficient as possible. I founded my business in 2017 after a woodworking apprenticeship in Southern Alberta and saw the possibilities in creating objects out of these raw materials.

Why We’re One of a Kind

My inspiration comes from my Mennonite background, its architecture, its quilts, and its generations of makers. But I also am inspired by the mix of tradition and modern minimalism. I grew up with parents who made almost everything around them, who were utterly self-sufficient. This has inspired me to also be self-sufficient in my own life, and to be knowledgable about where our objects come from.

Primary Materials

Various essences of wood (such as birch, walnut, cherry, ash and aspen), metal (copper) and concrete.
