Cori Lee Marvin - Fine Art

Cori Lee Marvin

Port Hope, Ontario, Canada

I suppose I have a non-traditional approach to watercolour... combining a flowing and loose medium with a precise and detailed style. Crisp, clean images and deep, saturated colours give my paintings clarity and depth. In many of my pieces, highly realistic subjects emerge in unusual surroundings and this juxtaposition creates intriguing visual stories. If nature and wildlife are transplanted indoors into still-life settings, the results are both startling and calming. My love of nature and the pull toward still-life have resulted in an unexpected yet compelling pairing.

I've been working as a full-time artist for 12 years. I've also worked as a freelance illustrator and contributed to a number of educational children’s books. As a participant in many fine art shows across Ontario, I was recently awarded first prize at the New Art Festival in Ottawa, Best in Painting at the Haliburton Art and Craft Festival, 2013 Best in Watercolour at the TOAE and The Carolyn McIntire Smyth Special Award at the Cabbagetown Festival in Toronto

Why We’re One of a Kind

All of the images and objects in my paintings are pulled from my beautiful surroundings here in Northumberland County. We are on 100 acres of land covered in old farm buildings, forest, streams, fields and hills. The creatures in my pieces are our closest neighbours! Each time I look out my studio windows, I see potential for new paintings. In addition to the abundance in the natural world, our hundred-year-old farmhouse is a wonderland of colours, textures and objects from bygone eras. It is the combination of the rich natural world and the emotional depth of family history that is the sweet spot for me.

Primary Materials

Watercolour is my first and singular artistic love. It offers an unusual combination of flexibility and rigidity, depending on my approach.

While my work is done originally in watercolour, all of the items for sale on my One of a Kind site are limited edition prints, made with archival inks. Each piece is double-matted for greater detail and depth.

My frames are made from basswood and are hand-sanded and stained. They are easy to hang with a sliding groove in the back and require no extra wire or equipment. Just a small nail with a nice head on it!
