Gavin Canning

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Gavin was born and raised in rural Newfoundland. From an early age he was inspired and encourage by his mother, a homemaker with a love of textiles, to pursue his artistic sensibilities.

After taking a break during his BA in Biology to volunteer in Ghana, West Africa, Gavin developed an interest in travel and world cultures which influenced him to return to his artistic roots. Gavin completed a degree in Studio Arts from Concordia University in Montreal in 2009 and in 2010 moved to Seoul, South Korea to teach English.

While living in Korea, he began taking frequent trips to Tokyo where he fell in love with the gorgeous array of colourful Japanese Chiyogami papers. On his breaks at work he began passing time learning to fold traditional origami in his classroom. Origami was a meditative and meticulous practice which taught him to move slowly and be patient while living in one of the most bustling cities in East Asia.

After more than 2 years living abroad, Gavin returned to Canada and continued his origami practice folding paper origami jewelry for his budding online shop. Gavin quickly moved from working with paper to hand-folded fine silver and gemstones and has recently been experimenting with 3D printed brass, sterling silver and 10K gold. His jewelry designs continue to be influenced by his love for origami often having a very geometric or folded look.
