Jessie Richards

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

I’m Jessie, and I started Leckie Apparel last year. When I’m not making clothes, I work as a curriculum developer for the University of Toronto, and I’m working towards a PhD in Higher Education. Both my work and my studies are very intellectually demanding, so Leckie Apparel is my tactile, creative outlet. All Leckie Apparel clothing items are designed, drafted, and sewn by me in my little apartment in downtown Toronto, Ontario; all the items I make are inspired by the amazing women in my life, and each item is named after one of them.

Why We’re One of a Kind

My intention when starting Leckie Apparel was to design classic, minimalist items for women who have more natural curves than other small makers tend to account for. Many offerings in the small-batch, sustainable/ethical clothing world tend to flatter a narrow, slender frame, which didn’t represent most of the women in my life. My designs, while varied in style, have measurements that support more volume in the bust and hip, and most items are designed to flatter a fuller figure. The sizing is also very accommodating - the Leckie Apparel XXL fits a US size 18-20.

Primary Materials

The fabrics I use are made with natural fibres (flax, hemp, bamboo, and/or wood pulp) and manufactured using eco-friendly processes (the fabrics are either GOTS or OEKO-TEX certified, which means they are manufactured ethically and sustainably).
