MINI-AGD Tree of Heaven with inlaid mulberry growth rings.
10” long and 6” wide
This lumber is from the Breslau area, in Woolwich Township, near Guelph Ontario, Canada; the mulberry comes from a tree in my back yard. Here I am working on the relationship between the pair of growth rings. Tree of Heaven is an extremely hard wood, and has a peculiar fragrance when cutting it. I wondered about the origin of the name...Wikipedia says the name is derived from the Ambonese word alianto, meaning "heaven tree" or "tree reaching for the sky". This comes with a flocked vinyl clutch case.
Our charcuterie pieces are created as 'one of a kind', so the item you see in the image is the one you would actually receive. Watching customers make their selection while at the One of a Kind Show helped me realize what an important personal choice it is.
We developed these smaller boards for several reasons... They are a perfect price and size for a gift, and exceptionally well presented in the flocked vinyl clutch case that Jody designed...They are lovely for a small snack for two, imagine a nice blue cheese, blackberry jelly, and some of yesterday's leftover baguette, with a couple of great glasses of wine (there wouldn't be wine leftover from yesterday)...For me, it allows me to sketch ideas, as sometimes once I see something, I can't unsee it, and I just need to make it.
Thicknesses vary, typically between 5/8" to 1" (19mm-25mm).
The back of each board is signed, as I perceive these as art, and hope they are enjoyed sometimes on a wall, and sometimes under sushi.
The back of the board is drilled and t-slotted so that it can be hung on the wall, as art, in either landscape or portrait format. The board is finished with multiple coats of tung oil. Regular oiling is required as maintenance, especially after use (it also makes cleanup easier if the board is well oiled immediately before use). Use and care instructions are provided, and each comes in a handsome flocked vinyl clutch case.
