As a kid, I spent most of my time dressed in a pioneer costume in my log cabin playhouse in the backyard. While my friends played with Pogs and Barbies, I’d make ink from lamp black and walnut shells, churn butter and grow wheat. My grandma gave me my first knitting lesson at six. Today, though I’ve tried many other things, from pastry-chefing to painting movie sets, I still find I’m happiest when I’m close to the garden. When I’m not tending to my edibles and flowers, I have found fulfilment as the creator, designer and knitter behind Westlake. I hand-dye natural-fibre yarns in steaming pots of custom-mixed colour and use skills rooted in tradition to produce thoughtfully-crafted wearables. Inspired by the challenge of a medium seen as old-fashioned, I design simple, chic pieces for the modern wanderer who still has a wool-clad toe in the past. The soft yarns and muted neutrals and jewel-tones of my colour palette recall nature, enveloping the wearer in the shelter of the garden, even as they step into icy streets.
The Westlake collection now also includes a line of premium natural
fibres, hand dyed with plant materials. Each skein is truly unique, as I
hand dye every one, using plant materials either foraged, from
dehydrated powders, or homegrown in my Toronto garden.
When you order a Westlake hand knit piece, you're getting an original design, hand knit by me in my Toronto studio. I am intimately involved in each and every step of the creation process from conceptualization, design and knitting to photography, packaging and shipping. I take great care to select soft natural materials in a rich array of colours, and design chic pieces that break away from knitting's traditional past.
Each Westlake design is hand knit from soft natural materials including sheep's wool, alpaca and silk.Westlake Fibres yarns are pure wool, naturally dyed with plants and minerals to achieve long lasting, eco friendly colours.
